MAPPING Art-Science-Technology
Rethinking, Art, Science and Technology for Social Europe
(connected events 2019/2020: workshop, symposium)
COURSE NAME: Studio in New-media & Contemporary Art
SUMMARY
The Studio course connects students and mentors from different disciplines into a cohesive topic-based and research-oriented production, usually in the form of a workshop, supported by online collaboration before and after a series of intensive live meetings. In terms of themes and topics the content is thus opened and completely dependent on particular needs of each year’s student cohort and students’ individual master projects. Here each student can combine his/her know-how with those of his/her peers becoming a part of a contextually wider production process.
AIMS, METHODS AND CONTENT
The second in this year’s cycle of MAST workshops will bring together artists, scientists and technologists from around Europe to learn from each other and develop methodologies that can bring about better futures for all. Based on a body of preparatory work, from March 11 to 15, 2019 the participants will meet at the University of Nova Gorica School of Arts to map, develop, iterate and pitch to the MAST committee novel methodologies that will gradually contribute to a toolbox for innovating the relationship of man and machine, in order to find innovative solutions for a truly Social Europe.
The workshop will create an opportunity to the students and their tutors to jointly develop methodology that can translate artistic ideations to the possible scenarios and prototypes. Such a process is usually called Do_it_Together (DITO), however here it will be moderated and lead in a manner that every participant will feel included. The process throughout the day will be structured with lectures and hands-on activities that will help the participants to understand the beauty and thrill of the innovation process from a prospective of artist, scientist/artist, entrepreneur/artist…
As a long-term aim of MAST, bringing different disciplines together into such a general framework should open up not only new working places and styles, but also bring about a new profile — the “innovation catalyst”, a multi-skilled and cross-knowledgeable person that competently switches between different professional realms, interconnects and develops new paradigms, finds unconventional, art-thinking based solutions, as well as provides necessary translations among realms.
Some creative concepts will be brought to Nova Gorica from the November workshop on Progressive Product Prototyping in Funchal, Portugal, several should spring up through new encounters and a fresh body of local participants in Nova Gorica, to be further iterated at the events in Graz (Spatial Design Challenge: Algorithmic Spatial Studies), Austria (April) then in Ljubljana, Slovenia (May), to be eventually evaluated, jointly reflected and prepared for the next academic year in the Rijeka, Croatia “Interfacing Academy” event.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- students explore a wider context and/or research of topics that may surround their specific final master projects and interests
- students reflect on the contemporary topics and methodologies in the field of media arts (new-media and contemporary art)
- students develop interdisciplinary and inter-professional competencies and engage in an interdisciplinary, interactive learning–production process.
- students develop testing and training grounds and tools for their (master project) ideas; in terms of a laboratory-oriented exploration
